The Patrol Division of the Sheriff’s Office is one of the most diverse and varying functions provided by the Sheriff. Deputies assigned to the patrol division are responsible for: general law enforcement and public safety, Coroner’s duties, off-highway vehicle patrol, over the snow patrols, contract service patrols for BLM and U.S. Forest Service, Court Security, Civil Processes, and Subpoena Services.
Providing general law enforcement and public safety throughout Lassen County is a challenging task.  Lassen County is comprised of approximately 4,600 square miles (2.9 million acres) or roughly the size of the state of Connecticut.  The geography alone makes it extremely difficult for Patrol Deputies to spend a great deal of time in all corners of the County.  The first approach in meeting the public’s needs is assigning deputies to “Resident” post patrol areas based on:  concentrated areas of population, geographic location, and calls for service volume.  The Resident Deputies live and work in their respective patrol areas.  Living in the patrol areas helps make these officers more attune to the needs of their community and also makes them more readily available for emergency response when needed.  There are currently 21 budgeted Deputy Sheriff positions and 4 Patrol Sergeant positions for patrol supervision.  Two of the deputies are assigned to full time Bailiff positions and one is assigned as a detective.  Of the 18 Deputies assigned to patrol: 1 is assigned to Big Valley, 2 assigned to Westwood, 2 assigned to Herlong / Doyle, and the remaining 13 assigned to the main office in Susanville.
